Ulric J. (Joe) Gelinas, Jr., PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Bentley University, Waltham, Massachusetts. For PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr. Gelinas developed and taught training programs for business processes, internal control, and IT audit. He was Senior Consultant for MIS Training Institute teaching courses in the IT Audit curriculum and taught in the University of Maastricht's International Executive Master of Finance and Control Program. Dr. Gelinas has also taught at the University of Tennessee and at Vesalius College, Vrije Universtiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Gelinas has published articles on inter-organizational collaboration and coordination infrastructures, accounting information systems, use of technology in business education, technical communications, and information privacy. The material is seriously dated. I work in accounting day in day out and am pursuing the degree to further that and while the book is easy, only the high level content is of any value. The systems information and even process flow discussions are directed and processes and environments that were common 15 years ago. Maybe still more relevant with smaller businesses since I don't deal with those on a day in day out basis.

Not the most exciting book but the content is covered fairly well. The only complaint is it gets really redundant. I think you can really learn the first few chapters and skim the rest without losing much understanding of the content.

The book is incredibly hard to read. For such a dull topic in the first place, the choice of vocabulary makes it clear that this book wasn't written for students who are assigned it, but as an artificial display of intellect. They should really consider their audience.

Made an A in the course. Book is okay- a typical textbook. I did enjoy reading some of the stories inside about various companies, but my instructor was the accountant for the WorldCom issues and his stories were better!

Its a tough read being a textbook but the information is robust. The layout of the chapter helped give the information real-world context and the data flow diagrams were very helpful.

The book reads like an instruction manual to database systems. The examples are terrible and there are numerous logical mistakes within the text—even the answer keys that the professor has is full of errors.

About the Author

Stephen Thornton is Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia. He has over 130 research publications in experimental nuclear physics and has done research at several accelerator facilities in the United States and Europe. He has directed the research for 25 graduate students. He has held two U.S. Senior Fulbright-Hays Fellowships and a Max-Planck Fellowship to do research at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany on two occasions. He was the founding Director of the University of Virginia Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics. He has published three college textbooks for physics. He is currently Director of the Master of Arts in Physics Education program at the University of Virginia, which has graduated more than 70 high school physics teachers. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of several organizations including American Association of Physics Teachers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Science Teachers Association, Virginia Association of Science Teachers (past President), and the Virginia Math and Science Coalition. I am using this book to study for a graduate-level physics assessment exam, so I am not going through it in the natural order of the chapters. I will update this review once I have finished going through the book.From what I've read so far, this is my new favorite mechanics book. In general, I have not been satisfied with any of the mechanics textbooks I've read so far, with my previous favorite being the Landau/Lifshitz mechanics text.As an undergraduate, I used lecture notes my professor wrote supplemented with Taylor's Classical Mechanics. I thought Taylor's book was very accessible, but was disappointed that it did not cover the material on a deeper level. However, the worked out examples were very helpful.In my Master's program, I used Goldstein's Classical Mechanics, and supplemented it with the Landau/Lifshitz book. Goldstein covered the material in more depth, but I felt like I was understanding the mathematics and missing out on some of the bigger connections between the mathematics and the physics. I also felt like I understood the material in the narrow context it was used, but that was about it. Goldstein also does not have very many worked out examples throughout the text, and that made learning some of the topics difficult. Landau/Lifshitz book provided me with much more insight into what was physically going on in these systems, and the repercussions of the math behind the systems. The L/L book is very terse, which can be both an advantage and disadvantage at times. The worked out problems usually do not include all of the steps, but enough is provided such that a student could write out the complete derivation on their own.So far I have really enjoyed Thorton & Marion. Here are the things I like about the book:-The authors are fairly thorough when it comes to these concepts. I think they even go into more depth than Goldstein on many of them. From reading these sections I feel like I have a much stronger understanding of the material than I did while reading any of the other books.- The use of language is very precise, and they are careful to say when and how the concepts they discuss are applicable. One of the biggest pet peeves of mine is when an author makes a vague or general statement than has room for interpretation.- I feel like I have a broader understanding of how these concepts are relevant both to other mechanical systems as well as outside of what is typically considered Classical Mechanics. There are plenty of references to how these concepts do or don't apply to e&m systems, atomic systems, etc.The books is not perfect. Here are what I think are the drawbacks:- I think that if this were my first exposure to the material, I would not find this book as helpful. I would not recommend it as an introductory text. Covering the material in this much detail on my first exposure would probably have made it difficult to keep track of the context as to why the author was covering this material, as well as where the authors were heading.- While many of the solved problems are helpful, I did not think the computational solved problems were helpful. Providing the code used would have been nice, as the author really doesn't provide that much on how the computational results were obtained. However, I do a lot of programming so maybe this would be helpful to me but not to most of the students reading this book.- Sometimes steps are skipped or choices are taken in the solved problems without a clear explanation of why the authors are solving the problems in this way. In one of the earlier problems I did not understand why the authors arbitrarily multiplied both sides by velocity to solve a differential equation, when I saw a much easier way of doing it.In summary: This is a very good textbook for an advanced undergraduate or early graduate physics student. If you are using for your first Classical Mechanics course, you may find it to be as helpful as I did. I can't speak about the appropriateness of the end-of-chapter problems, but for the most part the worked out problems are useful. As a reference or a review, I would definitely recommend this book.

The book is quite understandable, and presents the topics in an organized way. I think is a really good book for people seeing the material for the first time (undergraduate level). On the other hand, the final chapter problems are interesting ones. I truly recommend this book. It's quite well-written and at a reasonable price.

I find this book very helpful. The examples helped I'm my learning of the material. I looked it more than the actual book we were using in class.

+ : Mathematically rigorous; a "classical" treatment. A lot of example problems in Chapters. Solution manual available. Lagrange and Hamiltonian Formalism.- : Very few physical concepts. Often complicates concepts. End of chapter problems can be unnecessarily tedious. Special relativity is presented poorly.I would say this book is a good way of training yourself to "read" physics texts. The long computations may benefit some, while frustrate others. I don't think this text does a good job of providing physical concepts or stressing what is important; it's up to the reader to figure that out which makes the text a difficult read if one is unaccustomed to such a style. It certainly has a colder "classical" feel to it, which may be appealing to some, and unappealing to others. I often found myself researching the physical "insights" the authors would mention and felt dissatisfied with their explanations. This text may prove to have helped me more in the long run, but I feel unsatisfied with the amount of "physics" information I extracted from this book.

This is by far the best written text I have used. It is pedantic in a good way that does the history of the topic justice and inspires the reader.

The best classical book I've found. Examples are detailed and clear.

I'm currently studying for a final exam in an introductory classical mechanics course. Throughout the course, I knew this book was hard to understand, but a truly excellent professor helped clarify the text and explain the ambiguities in the problems.Presently as I go through the text in preparation for the final with an increased maturity in the subject, I can see its flaws more clearly. The notation used throughout the book is inconsistent (such as the use of T or K almost randomly for Kinetic Energy), examples are not thorough, and the explanation of basic physics is convoluted. In short, using this book as an introduction to classical mechanics without the assistance of an experienced professor is almost impossible.Being an introductory course, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods were only touched upon as a primer for later classes. I purchased my copy of the book in used condition and have not had any problems with the binding, although the price does seem extravagant.

The book is decent to understand and uses equations from Vector Calculus or Calculus III. Examples are helpful on certain sections, but not all sections have examples. If you take a look at the practice problems, some will ask to proof of equations that are similar to Calculus III. My advice: take Calculus III before enrolling a class that use this book. This book isn't exactly what I wanted, but it's still got some good points. There is decent amount of discussion of bluegrass. There is a page with some common chords and then a few "G-runs". After that it's essentially a songbook. There is some discussion of each song, but nothing in depth. I'm not sure if this was just my version or what, but sometimes it seems like he wanted to put examples in the book and they're not there. Specifically on Dill Pickle Rag it says something like, work on some of these before you try the song and half the page is blank. Also, there are only 2-3 songs on the CD. I get that he probably wants people to buy albums and actually listen to real bluegrass. I don't fault him for that.Good Points:Lots of good information on Bluegrass (mostly old school bluegrass).The songs included are varied and fun to play.There is an emphasis on songs and there is a lot of good music/tabNegative aspects:Little instruction.CD doesn't have much on it.Songs may be a little advanced for a complete beginner and instruction is too elementary for someone more advanced.Books seems to be missing practice sections.

I bought my original copy of this, back in the mid 70's as a teenager, and in the good ol' days (!) you got one of those flexible vinyl records inside the book, that you removed and put on a turntable to hear the examples.Thirty-something years later, I decided I wanted to actually learn how to play "Under the Double Eagle", as I never did, and my original copy is long since lost.My new copy just arrived, and in 2009, you get a CD, not the record, but everything else is the same.I think this is a great book, you get tab and notation for 30 songs, some history, tips, and a reference guide in the back.Sure, it would be nice if ALL the songs were on the CD, but they are not, but for the price, how can you complain? By the way, for the songs I wanted to learn to play but was not familiar with, you can find them all on youtube, get the basics of the song, and easily work with the tab in the book.I think this book is a classic, and I am quite happy to have it back in my collection.

I gave this as a gift to my husband, who took formal guitar lessons but is interested in learning bluegrass. A lot of information in this book and it was all very simple to understand. My purchase did not come with a CD or record, as indicated on the cover so I can't speak to that. Overall happy with my purchase and excited to hear some great bluegrass songs played!

I cut my teeth on this book in the mid- 1970's and still appreciate it. Good stuff for beginners to advanced, and wonderful pictures for the Bluegrass fan. I've seen it other places for twice what I paid on Amazon.The cover shows Artie Traum playing a guitar he picked up in a NY City pawn shop for...$75 if memory serves me. I saw one sell for $125,000 24 months ago!

"Bluegrass Guitar" by Happy Traum was probably the best book of its kind when it was published in 1974, but time and technology have passed this book by. There are better alternatives available, especially if you are a beginner. This book does have a lot of great bluegrass songs and includes standard music notation, tablature, and lyrics. As a collection of bluegrass sheet music it's just fine. My disappointment with this book is mainly with the included CD and it's instructional value. The CD contains less than nineteen minutes of material. Only five of the thirty songs in the book are included on the CD and only one of those is played at a slow tempo for practicing.For guitarists wanting to learn bluegrass, I recommend, "Teach Yourself Bluegrass Guitar" by Russ Barenburg. It contains many of the same bluegrass tunes as Happy's book and all of them are included on its CD. Each song is played twice, once with lead guitar and once with rhythm only for practicing. (Which is a nice feature because most instructional CDs want you to use the balance control to isolate the rhythm part, but most "boom-boxes" these days don't have that control anymore.) While none of the songs are played really slowly for beginners, Russ isn't burning up the strings either. The songs are played at a moderate performance pace - suitable for learning. The music on this CD is so good that I often listen to it in my car just for fun.For the true beginner interested in country/bluegrass and flatpicking, I suggest "Acoustic Guitar Primer" by Bert Casey. It's a great book for those just starting out and has some great bluegrass arrangements for beginners. It comes with an excellent instructional CD that has all of the songs played slowly and at performance tempo.

pretty straight forward book, i would advise having at least some experience prior to getting this book. it has beginner stuff in it and some good instruction and history in it. LOTS of songs too! I got a good laugh out of the listening instruction aid: not a cd like i expected but a no kidding record! all in all not bad, just make sure you have patience just like any other instructional book

Great things about this book:1. It assumes only very basic guitar and Bluegrass knowledge.2. Standard musical notation and tablature.3. Teaches you not only the basics (the guitar run, the boom-chicka effect) but also a variety of guitar solos that gradually build up your skills.4. Great instructional CD.5. Gives you a good basic repertoire of classic Bluegrass / folk / gospel songs.If you want to learn the basics before you go to a Bluegrass festival, take this book to the woodshed. Even if you aren't interested in Bluegrass per se, this book is a good introduction to flatpicking generally.

This book is a nifty introduction to playing bluegrass music. The beginner can find their way in and make sure you listen to orgiginals. learnt to count and transpose and hey presto. You doin' it yourself!
